Day 1 - A Monumental Time in Washington, D.C.
Welcome to Washington, D.C., the nation's capital and a haven for history and art buffs alike. Join your Travel Director and meet fellow guests at a private Welcome Dinner with drinks at 18:00.

Day 2 - Washington, D.C. to Shenandoah National Park
This morning, immerse yourself on a sightseeing tour of Washington D.C. View iconic sights and national monuments, including the White House, Washington Monument, the National Mall and Lincoln Memorial. Visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture on a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience. As the newest member of the Smithsonian Institution, this is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. Leave the city sights behind in the afternoon and travel along Skyline Drive, the main scenic drive into Shenandoah National Park. Day 4 - Exploring New River Gorge National Park
Today explore New River Gorge National Park, the newest park in the America’s National Park System, encompassing over 70,000 acres of land. Visit the Canyon Rim Visitor Center to learn all about the history and flora and fauna of the park. Then stroll a picturesque boardwalk trail to enjoy magnificent views of the New River Gorge and New River Bridge. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy the park and hotel amenities at your leisure. Guests can also choose to take an optional guided Bridge Walk to learn the history of the longest single arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere.

Day 5 - A feast of music and food in Asheville N.C.
This morning, depart for Asheville and unleash your inner musician with a tour of the famous Citizen Vinyl Record press factory. Later, get a true taste of Asheville on a walking food tour. Day 6 - The Biltmore Estate

On our Washington DC by Land & Sea Private Experience, you get to try out two of them – biking and boating! Our expert DC tour guides host your intimate experiences and give you a chance to get up close and personal to the sights of Washington DC, first via pedal power, then followed up with a spin on a private boat.

The fun starts when your private bicycle tour guide meets you in your hotel lobby and guides you on a fabulous four-hour bike ride where you’ll take in all the monuments, memorials and other points of interest around the city. Your bike tour will end near the water where you may opt to get a bite to eat (cost of lunch not included) before you meet up with your private U.S. Coast Guide licensed captain/tour guide.

Once aboard your private sport boat, you’ll have the chance to wind down from your biking excursion, relax and simply soak up the sun. You’ll also be soaking in the views from the magnificent vantage point of the waters surrounding DC, including the Washington Channel and the Potomac River.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, NC

Located in western North Carolina (near Cherokee) and shared with Tennessee, the Smoky Mountains get their name from the bluish haze that has always clung to them. (Sadly, the natural haze has been made thicker by man-made pollution—smog from far-off cities collects on the peaks.) The Appalachians, including this part of the chain, are thought to be among the oldest mountains on Earth, having formed 500 million years ago.

Located 260 mi/420 km southwest of Raleigh, the Smokies can be a great area to drive through: The scenery is both relaxing and striking at the same time. It's hard to relax when you're in the midst of a traffic jam, however, and that's often the case in the summer months and during the fall-color season: It's the most-visited national park in the U.S. If possible, visit in the spring or early fall when the crowds are a bit thinner. Avoid the main entrances (Cherokee/Oconalufftee), where 75% of visitors congregate. Instead, try some of the less popular access points near Cataloochee or Big Creek.

Because the region receives a lot of rain, a great variety of trees and plants thrive in the Smokies (the water vapor emitted by all the greenery is the cause of the natural haze). In mid-April and early May, wildflowers bloom along the roadside, and pink and purple rhododendron blossoms decorate the area in June and July. But many think the park is at its prettiest in autumn (mid-October), when the fall foliage turns colors. The park is also full of animals (bears, deer, elk, wild turkeys), waterfalls and several historical sites, including the remains of a frontier settlement at Cades Cove.

There are plenty of hiking opportunities in the park, from brief strolls to multiday backpacking excursions. (Getting out on the trails will increase your chances of finding some solitude.) You'll need a backcountry permit for overnight camping, and they can be hard to come by for some areas in peak season. Reserve in advance, if possible.

One of the park's biggest draws is the hike up Mount LeConte (one of your better chances of seeing a bear—but keep your distance if you do). There's a lodge near the summit for overnight accommodations. If you'd rather drive to a high summit, you can take the road to Clingman's Dome, the highest point in the park. An observation tower provides good views—if the peak isn't wrapped in fog.

Activities in the park include interpretive programs, picnicking, fishing and horseback riding. There are several campgrounds, though they get extremely full in the summer. Campsites can be reserved in advance for the Cades Cove, Elkmont and Smokemont Campgrounds.
